VEGAN…BUT NOT “ONE OF THOSE”
Vegan…but not one of those. What does this shirt mean? If your asking because you’re vegan and offended, chance are I’m talking about you.
When I first started my vegan journey, I was reluctant to share it because I didn’t know many vegans, but I didn’t care to be associated with the ones I knew. Bill and Ami Mackey aka “BlAmi” (known in the boxing world as my “Vegan People”) were the ones that introduced me to the vegan lifestyle.
There were the only vegans I interacted with and I love them. But I avoided other vegans like the plague. After immersing myself into the vegan world, I met many people (primarily athletes) who shared with me their big secret. “I’m vegan too, but yah know…”. There were so many cool, down to Earth, judge-free vegans. You don’t know they exist because they don’t care to share it.
There are many vegans that are vegan for sports performance reasons and not for the animals. The animal rights movement has claimed the vegan movement for themselves. They are passionate people, I get it. But the few unlikeable ones have put a dark cloud over the animal rights movement and the word “vegan”.
Many of the animal rights vegans not only demand others adopted a vegan diet, they also want you to be vegan for their own personal reasons. These are “One of those” vegans.
Why am I vegan? Eh- I don’t care to share why. Do I think it would be beneficial for others to be vegan? Of course! Would I like if the entire world became vegan? Yup. Will I force it on others? Nah.
Be vegan for the animals, be vegan for health, be vegan for the environment, be vegan for sports performance. Hell, be vegan during meatless Monday’s and enjoy your steaks the rest of the week. Do you, boo-boo.
I usually don’t get preachy about my diet but there is always an overweight, unhealthy, non athletic person that feels the need to tell me I’m not reaching my full potential because of my diet. 🙄 I once had a woman on a bar patio tell me about B12 while as she finished her cigarette.
There is a large vegan movement (that I hope isn’t a fad), and many have adopted the term “plant-based” for rebranding purposes. Maybe veganism will never be universally cool, but I don’t intend on stopping. I see nothing wrong with being compassionate towards animals.
But not one of those. I’m not the stereotypical vegan. I’m not what people think about when they hear “Vegan”. I’m not white, I don’t do yoga, I’m not frail, and unlike the peaceful people you think of when you think vegan, I get road rage from time to time.
This shirt will be the first of many that I will be selling with the intent to rebrand the vegan movement. My reason for rebranding? I love being vegan so I hate that something I love is so culturally disliked.
These shirts will eventually fund the foster transport nonprofit I plan on starting towards the end of the year. I will be having more apperal available soon. You can purchase shirts here:
